The effects of antidepressants on adults from 25 to 64 were mixed, so much so that the FDA would only conclude the drug had a neutral effect on suicidal behavior for them but possibly lowers the risk of suicidal thoughts

The effects of antidepressants on adults from 25 to 64 were mixed, so much so that the FDA would only conclude the drug had a neutral effect on suicidal behavior for them but possibly lowers the risk of suicidal thoughts.

The information came from a mass review of 372 studies involving roughly 100,000 patients and 11 drugs, including Lexapro, Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil. The FDA analysis will be incorporated in future changes to antidepressant labels, but the agency wants to first discuss its plans with outside advisers.

In 2004, the FDA ordered strong warnings about the pediatric risk of suicidal tendencies put on antidepressant labels, and began analyzing whether adults face a similar risk, in part by requesting data from drug companies.

It now appears there is an increased risk among adults between the ages of 18 and 25.

«When results are analyzed by age, it becomes clear that there is an elevated risk for suicidality and suicidal behavior among adults younger than 25 years of age that approaches that seen in the pediatric population,» the FDA said in documents that were released ahead of the Dec. 13 meeting of its psychopharmacologic drugs advisory committee.

The FDA’s analysis of the multiple studies suggests an age-related shift in the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior associated with treatment with the drugs. That means the risk appears to decline with age, even if the numbers don’t explain why, the FDA said. The issue is complex to sort out because depression itself can lead to suicide.

All antidepressants now bear a so-called «black-box» warning about the increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children and adolescents.

In May, GlaxoSmithKline and the FDA warned Paxil may raise the risk of suicidal behavior in young adults, too, 군산출장안마 and changed the drug’s label to reflect that risk.

breast cancer rates in 2003

Hormones had been prescribed for decades in the belief that they helped ward off heart problems, 홍천출장안마 dementia and a host of other ills beyond curing hot flashes. Many doctors and women, too, were reluctant to buy the new study’s conclusions.

Now there is more evidence that hormones and breast cancer are linked.

A new analysis documents a staggering 7 percent drop in U.S. breast cancer rates in 2003. The report, presented Thursday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, does not prove a link between hormone therapy and breast cancer, but strongly suggests it, many experts said.

«When I saw it, I couldn’t believe it,» statistician Donald Berry of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston said of the drop.

Cancers take years to form, so going off hormones would not instantly prevent new tumors. But tumors that had been developing might stop growing, shrink or disappear so they were no longer detected by mammograms, doctors theorized.

Cases dropped most among women 50 and older — the age group taking hormones. The decline was biggest for tumors whose growth is fueled by estrogen — the type most affected by hormone use.

The drop was seen in every single cancer registry that reports information to the federal government, and no big change occurred with any other major type of cancer. These are strong signs that the breast cancer decline is no statistical fluke or error.

«It’s very difficult to wrap your arms around this subject of the various pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy,» adds CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook.

«It’s a big deal … amazing, really,» said another of the researchers, Dr. Rowan Chlebowski of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. «It’s better than a cure» because these are cases that never occurred, he said.

About 200,000 cases of breast cancer had been expected that year; the drop means that about 14,000 fewer women actually were diagnosed with the disease.

A separate study by the American Cancer Society, currently in press with a medical journal, also documents the drop. Lead author Ahmedin Jemal attributes two-thirds of it to a decline in hormone use and the rest to mammography use leveling off, resulting in fewer tumors being detected.

«We are really trying to look at the big picture,» he said. «You cannot rule out the effect of screening.»

Breast cancer is the most common major cancer in American women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. About 213,000 new cases are expected to occur in the United States this year and more than 1 million worldwide.

Some were circumcised; others were just monitored

The National Institutes of Health said Wednesday it closed the studies in Kenya and Uganda early, when safety monitors took a look at initial results this week and spotted the protection. The studies’ uncircumcised men are being offered the chance to undergo the procedure.

The link between male circumcision and HIV prevention was noted as long ago as the late 1980s. The first major clinical trial, of 3,000 men in South Africa, found last year that circumcision cut the HIV risk by 60 percent.

Still, many AIDS specialists had been awaiting the NIH’s results as a final confirmation.

«Male circumcision can lower both an individual’s risk of infection, and hopefully the rate of HIV spread through the community,» said AIDS expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and 의정부출장안마 Infectious Diseases.

But it is not perfect protection, Fauci stressed. Men who become circumcised must not quit using condoms nor take other risks — and circumcision offers no protection from HIV acquired through anal sex or injection drug use, he noted.

«It’s not a magic bullet, but a potentially important intervention,» agreed Dr. Kevin De Cock of the World Health Organization.

Male circumcision is common at birth in the United States. But in sub-Saharan Africa, home to more than half of the world’s almost 40 million HIV-infected people, there are large swaths of populations where male circumcision is rare.

The WHO plans an international meeting early next year to discuss the studies’ results and how to translate them into policies that promote safe male circumcision — done by trained health workers with sterile equipment — while teaching men that it will not make them invulnerable.

If male circumcision were widely adopted, officials predicted that could help to avert tens of thousands of HIV infections in coming years; Fauci cited one model from South Africa that suggested possibly up to 2 million infections could be averted over a decade.

«This is tremendous news, and it could help millions of men while in turn reducing the risk faced by millions of women,» said Paul Zeitz of the Global AIDS Alliance.

Why would male circumcision play a role? Cells in the foreskin of the penis are particularly susceptible to the HIV virus, Fauci explained. Also, the foreskin is more fragile than the tougher skin surrounding it, providing a surface that the virus could penetrate more easily.

Researchers enrolled 2,784 HIV-negative men in Kisumu, Kenya, and 4,996 HIV-negative men in Rakai, Uganda, into the studies. Some were circumcised; others were just monitored.

Over two years, 22 of the circumcised Kenyans became infected with HIV compared with 47 uncircumcised men, a 53 percent reduction. In Uganda, 22 circumcised men became infected vs. 43 of the uncircumcised, a 48 percent reduction.

The researchers are offering all of the studies’ uncircumcised men the chance to undergo the procedure, and 80 percent of the uncircumcised Ugandans already have agreed, said lead researcher Ronald Gray of Johns Hopkins University.

Side effects were rare, including some mostly mild infections that were easily treated. The rate of side effects was comparable to those seen in circumcised U.S. infants, said Robert Bailey of the University of Illinois at Chicago, who led the Kenyan trial.

«The fat are getting fatter and fatter and the gap between the healthy and the very unhealthy is growing,» Fry said, warning that paying for more weight loss surgeries would be a huge burden for the British government

Dr. Omar Faiz, a consultant surgeon at St. Mary’s Hospital in London and colleagues monitored the number of weight-loss surgeries done in government hospitals from 2000 to 2008. Overall, they found 6,953 such operations were performed, including three different types of surgeries, all designed to shrink the size of the patient’s stomach.

In 2000, there were 238 weight loss surgeries, but by 2007 there were 2,543 such operations. The study was paid for by Britain’s National Institute of Health Research.

Faiz described the increase in surgeries as «exponential,» but was unsure if it would continue.

«We don’t know whether we’ve seen the summit of the peak, but the trend still looks to be going upwards,» he said. He said there were not enough data to know how many obese people were awaiting the surgery in England, but said the number of people getting the surgery was likely only a small proportion of those who qualified for it and wanted it.

Faiz and colleagues found that the majority of patients who got the weight loss surgeries were women and were from poorer areas. Most patients were in their 40s. The surgeries also appeared to be safe; the risk of dying one year after the surgery was about 1 percent. The study was published Friday in the medical journal, BMJ.

Since 2002, when Britain’s health watchdog recommended weight loss surgery for morbidly obese people, usually defined as those with a Body Mass Index above 40, there has been a sharp increase in the number of such procedures.

Some experts weren’t surprised by the figures and said the obesity epidemic was likely to accelerate the demand for such surgeries in the future.

«It’s very alarming that people have been allowed to get so fat without anyone intervening in time, said Tam Fry, spokesman for the National Obesity Forum, a British advocacy group. He was not connected to the BMJ study.

«The fat are getting fatter and fatter and the gap between the healthy and the very unhealthy is growing,» Fry said, warning that paying for more weight loss surgeries would be a huge burden for the British government. He said experts should focus on preventing obesity before surgery becomes necessary.

«People have the idea that they can eat and eat and then get (weight loss surgery) to solve the problem,» he said. «That will be disastrous both for the individual and for 연천출장안마 the state.»

In addition to promoting the album, he has numerous business ventures and his foundation to think about

«As a performer, I love it,» the 29-year-old R&B superstar told The ShowBuzz. «I love both shows (‘Dancing With The Stars’ and ‘American Idol’). They give us a great plane of exposure for up-and-coming talent as well as for artists that are well-established.»

Usher will be on the finale of the ABC ballroom competition to promote his fifth album, «Here I Stand,» out May 27. This is the singer’s first album since his marriage to Tameka Foster and the birth of their first child last year.

«Here you have before you a young man who stepped into true manhood,» Usher told The ShowBuzz in a recent interview. «Not only because of my child but because of the decisions I made in the last two years. Now I’m able to voice how I feel about certain things and allow myself to be vulnerable in exposing certain things through my music.»

One thing’s for certain, Usher is still a hitmaker. In March, the album’s lead single, «Love In This Club» posted the third-largest jump to No. 1 in Billboard Hot 100 history, rocketing from No. 51 the week before.

The song features Young Jeezy, and the remix of the song has appearances by Beyonce and Lil Wayne. Will.i.am and Jay-Z are also on the album.

In the future, Usher said he would like to collaborate with fellow multi-hyphenate talent Justin Timberlake.

«I honestly feel like Justin is the equivalent of me white, and I am the equivalent of what he could be black,» Usher laughed. «I know that sounds crazy, but I hear that comparison all the time.

«I think if we came together there would be no color 고흥출장안마 barrier. It would be two guys making an incredible record.»

In the meantime, Usher is gearing up for quite a busy year. In addition to promoting the album, he has numerous business ventures and his foundation to think about. He says he’s able to get everything done by having a great team and employing basic time management techniques.

Out of all the roles he plays, parenting is the most important to Usher.

«I want to be the coolest dad in the world,» he said. «I want to make sure that I’m proud of the father that I am to my child. That would be the most rewarding out of all of them.»
