Beyond military cooperation, the leaders also discussed the U.S.-led campaign to defeat Islamic State militants in the Middle East, combat the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa, and stop Russia’s destabilizing actions in Ukraine

The meeting, the first since 2007 among leaders of the three allies, risked antagonizing Beijing after a week when Obama reached a surprising level of consensus with Chinese President Xi Jinping on climate change and trade, and Japan and China took steps to improve their relationship.

China has viewed Obama’s efforts to deepen alliances with other countries in the region, particularly on security issues, as an attempt to counter Beijing’s rise.

In a joint statement following the meeting, the three leaders said they had agreed to «deepen the already strong security and defense cooperation» between their countries. They also agreed to work on boosting «maritime security capacity building» in a region rife with disputes between China and its neighbors over claims to waters and islands.

However, there were no announcements on specific military exercises or new troop deployments within the region.

White House officials insisted that the three-way talks on the sidelines of the Group of 20 economic summit were not meant to send a message to China. But in advance of Obama’s meeting with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Japan’s Shinzo Abe, the president pressed China to «adhere to the same rules as other nations — whether in trade or on the seas.»

«By virtue of its size and its remarkable growth, China will inevitably play a critical role in the future of this region,» Obama said Saturday in a speech at the University of Queensland. «And the question is, what kind of role will it play?»

An Obama administration official said the three-way meeting had been in the works for a year. Beyond military cooperation, the leaders also discussed the U.S.-led campaign to defeat Islamic State militants in the Middle East, combat the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa, and stop Russia’s destabilizing actions in Ukraine.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been of particular concern in Australia, which lost 38 citizens when Moscow-backed rebels downed a commercial airliner earlier this year.

Australia was Obama’s last stop on a weeklong trip that began in China and Myanmar. He arrived politically weakened at home by the Democratic Party’s election defeats Nov. 4. The president has tried to show the region’s leaders that he retained the ability to deliver on promises to deepen U.S. engagement in Asia and the Pacific, an effort he sees as a central part of his foreign policy.

«There are times when people have been skeptical of this rebalance, they’re wondering whether America has the staying power to sustain it,» Obama said. «I’m here to say that American leadership in the Asia Pacific will always be a fundamental focus of my foreign policy.»

In China, he emerged with an ambitious agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a deal to extend visa lengths and move forward on tariff reductions on high-tech goods.

But despite those areas of agreement, there are major 바카라사이트 sources of tension between the powers, particularly Beijing’s provocative actions in territorial disputes in waters off its borders.

The conflict between China and Japan over a string of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea has been intense, with Beijing setting up an air defense zone over the area last year that was denounced by the U.S.

During a trip to Tokyo this year, Obama pledged to fulfill America’s treaty obligations to defend Japan if it were to come under attack from China as part of the conflict over the islands.

In recent days, China and Japan have acted to try to ease tensions. Xi and Abe held their first-ever meeting in Beijing this past week, a discussion the Japanese leader called a «first step» toward reconciling.

Australia, the G-20 host, has played an important role in Obama’s efforts to bolster the U.S. military presence in the region in order to be a counterweight to China. During a trip to Australia in 2011, Obama announced a plan to rotate 2,500 U.S. Marines through a military base in the northern city of Darwin.

Unfortunately I think young artists, especially coming from a Disney background, especially want to change that image

Don’t get your heart set on anything more than the 90-second *NSYNC reunion seen on the MTV Video Music Awards. The performance marked the first time the band played together in 11 years, and also the last time they’ll do it, at least for a while.

«It would be lovely to do it, but we’ve got nothing planned,» Lance Bass told The Associated Press on Monday between breaks of his Sirius XM show, «Dirty Pop With Lance Bass.»

One reason is that Justin Timberlake begins his solo tour this fall, and Bass says the closest he’ll get to the stage is a seat in the audience.

«Who knows what will happen when he’s off tour. It’s simply not part of the conversation right now. We just focused on that one performance,» Bass said. «If we did anything like that, I think we would come up with something real special where we could actually call it ‘The Reunion.'»

Bass, along with fellow boy-band 바카라사이트 mates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez, joined Timberlake, who was already performing at the VMAs on Sunday night. They wanted to do something special for Timberlake for receiving The Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, the VMA’s equivalent of a lifetime achievement award.

Chasez told Ryan Seacrest that the reunion was Timberlake’s idea, noting that they received a call from Timberlake: «Hey man, listen. I’m getting this award and they have given me a pile of time to perform and we started our careers at MTV and I think we should get the band back together. It really was about him and all that he’s accomplished, but he wanted to acknowledge that part of his career, so we all decided to do it.»

While the last 15 seconds of their reunion performance made Bass feel nauseous, getting to the stage was an adrenaline rush.

«We had to perform in the middle of the arena, so there was no way of getting us out there without being seen. So they dressed us in big ole hoodies to pretend we were the stagehands. So we would push out the stage and do all the stagehand stuff until we got to the area and hid out beneath a staircase,» Bass said. «That was my favorite part.»

Bass said just before they stopped performing, he felt queasy from nerves.

As for the show, Bass shared his view on the evening’s most controversial performance when Miley Cyrus stripped down to a nude bikini, erotically grinded with Robin Thicke and made suggestive gestures with a foam hand with a pointed finger.

The singer said his young nieces and nephews watched the VMAs for the first time to see their uncle perform in *NSYNC.

«I didn’t know I had to warn them that their little Hannah Montana was going to be naked and humping a finger,» Bass said.

During a commercial break, he spoke more of the incident.

«I think it’s her thing. I think she shocked a lot of her younger fans, especially the parents, who might not be so happy with her thing, and she’s just being Miley,» Bass said.

«I mean it is a big deal. Unfortunately I think young artists, especially coming from a Disney background, especially want to change that image. … Lady Gaga does it. Everyone is like what can I do just to really shock people. But Lady Gaga and a lot of people have really missed the mark a lot where it goes over people’s heads.»

«The story tonight was in the hit column with a zero on it,» MLB manager John Farrell said

TOKYO — Takahiro Norimoto combined with three relievers on a no-hitter, and Japan beat the Major League Baseball All-Stars 4-0 on Saturday to take a 3-0 lead in their five-game series.

Hayato Sakamoto and Sho Nakata each hit a two-run homer.

Norimoto, who went 14-10 with a 3.02 ERA this season for the Rakuten Eagles, struck out six over five perfect innings to pick up the win.

«It’s too good to be true,» Norimoto said. «I wanted to see how my pitches would work against MLB hitters. The fact that my teammate (Motohiro) Shima was catching made me feel at ease and I was able to perform as usual. The atmosphere at the park was really nice. It was the best outing of my career.»

Yuki Nishi took over from Norimoto and struck out four with one walk over two innings. Kazuhisa Makita struck out two in the eighth and 바카라사이트 Yuji Nishino retired the side in the ninth.

«The story tonight was in the hit column with a zero on it,» MLB manager John Farrell said. «Norimoto was outstanding. He was very efficient. He has a powerful fastball and very good late action to go with his split, his slider and cutter.»

CBSSports.com reports that Robinson Cano was ruled out for the remainder of the series after suffering a non-displaced fracture of the pinkie toe on his right foot. Cano was hit by a pitch on the right foot in the seventh inning and left the game.

Sakamoto connected off MLB starter Jeremy Guthrie in the second inning, and Nakata made it 4-0 in the third with a blast off Guthrie over the left field wall.

Guthrie took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in five innings.

The MLB All-Stars won an exhibition game 8-7 before the start of the series but have scored just four runs over the first three games.

Chris Capuano will pitch Game 4 while Shintaro Fujinami will take the mound for Japan.

»We will visit with our coaching staff and try to come up with a lineup that has the ability to go up against Fujinami, who we know is a very good pitcher,» Farrell said.

Congress Resumes Debate On Stem Cells

But opponents won’t have much luck peeling off support from a bill to be debated in the House this week that would clear the way for expanding taxpayer-funded embryonic stem cell research, a co-sponsor of the bill predicted.

«We won’t lose anyone who was going to support the bill,» said Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., one of her party’s vote-counters in the House.

But, she said, «People who would have already opposed the (embryonic) stem cell bill will use this breakthrough as an excuse to vote no.»

President Bush and other opponents of government-paid embryonic stem cell research say the new research buttresses their case that science need not advance at the expense of budding human life. Embryonic stem cell research, they say, is immoral because the process of culling the stem cells kills the embryo.

In contrast, the research reported this week suggests that stem cells extracted harmlessly from the amniotic fluid that cushions a fetus in-utero hold much the same promise for disease-fighting as embryonic stem cells. Scientists hope that someday stem cells may be used against diseases such as for Lou Gehrig’s, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer.

«We’re talking about saving lives here,» said Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., an obstetrician and staunch opponent of embryonic stem cell research. «We don’t have to split the nation on this if we’ve got an alternative.»

Polls show Americans overwhelmingly support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. And scientists aren’t sure that stem cells shed by a fetus and extracted from the surrounding fluid carry the same possibility for treatments and cures of diseases as those culled from embryos.

The scientific community says embryonic stem cells so far are backed by the most promising evidence that one day they might be used to grow replacements for damaged tissue, such as new insulin-producing cells for diabetics or 온라인카지노 new nerve connections to restore movement after spinal injury

Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who is sponsoring the same bill in the Senate, called it cruel to raise expectations that stem cells derived from amniotic fluid carry the same promise as embryonic stem cells.

He said the report on the new research «offers no evidence that amniotic stem cells have as much potential as embryonic stem cells to differentiate into all other cells in the human body.»

The report by researchers at Wake Forest and Harvard universities appears in the January edition of the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Whatever the effect of the discovery on the policy debate, Mr. Bush is all but certain to cast a second veto of the embryonic stem cell bill if it reaches his desk.

White House spokesman Tony Snow on Monday stopped short of issuing an endorsement of the amniotic process, but he made clear that the president views it favorably.

«Obviously, there is a difference between using amniotic stem cells that do not, by design, involve the destruction of a human life, and embryonic stem cell research, which does,» Snow told reporters.

Co-sponsored by DeGette and Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., the legislation would lift Mr. Bush’s 2001 ban on federal dollars spent on deriving new stem cells from fertilized embryos. The president cast the lone veto of his presidency against an identical stem cell bill six months ago, saying he did not want to destroy life in the name of science.

The House is not expected to muster the two-thirds majority to override a veto. The Senate, expected to take up the bill in a few weeks, may be a handful of votes away from that veto-proof threshold.

Embryonic stem cells are able to morph into any of the more than 220 cell types that make up the human body. They typically are culled from fertility-clinic leftovers otherwise destined to be thrown away. But because the culling kills the embryos, Mr. Bush on Aug. 9, 2001, restricted government funding to research using only the embryonic stem cell lines then in existence, groups of stem cells kept alive and propagating in lab dishes.

But there are only about 21 of those lines available for study, most created in ways that preclude use in humans. At least 300 more lines now are available that many scientists insist are better suited for implantation into sick people.

The new legislation would allow the National Institutes of Health to fund research using those already existing, newer stem cell lines.

The bills are H.R. 3 and S.5.

It’s where you and I do the gritty work of actually living.» «As you move further in life you begin to deal with real limitations and real disappointments — and we found ourselves writing songs kind of exploring those themes,» added Haseltine of the Grammy-winning band

For the members of Jars of Clay, it’s hard to believe it’s been nearly two decades since releasing their self-titled debut album.

바카라사이트«I don’t think any of us would have calculated that we would have done it for five years, much less 20 years,» guitarist Matt Odmark said during a recent visit to CBSNews.com. «It puts us in a very grateful place these days.»

Now Odmark, along with singer Dan Haseltine, guitarist Steve Mason and keyboardist Charlie Lowell are releasing a new album, «Inland,» on Tuesday — on the heels of 2010’s «Shelter.» For the first time, the band has officially gone «indie,» releasing the set on its own label, Gray Matters.

«These are songs for the ordinary days — when life is weighty and uncertain,» said Odmark. «It is this middle space that we have inhabited over the years. It’s where you and I do the gritty work of actually living.»

«As you move further in life you begin to deal with real limitations and real disappointments — and we found ourselves writing songs kind of exploring those themes,» added Haseltine of the Grammy-winning band.

For «Inland,» the Nashville-based band teamed with producer Tucker Martine, who has previously worked with Beth Orton, the Decemberists and My Morning Jacket.

«He really fits in an organic space really well,» Haseltine told CBSNews.com. «So coming to Jars where we sort of have a balance of electronic music and folk music, he was able to find a really good space for the album.»

Haseltine says that because Jars of Clay has been around for a while, the guys hoped to find something new and 바카라사이트 different — yet authentic — to say with their music.

Fans received a taste of the new music when lead single, «After The Fight,» was released earlier this summer, and Jars of Clay has been performing the latest songs in concert. More shows are being lined up for the fall — as these guys have no plans to slow down any time soon.

«Nobody encourages you as a 16- or 17-year-old [to] ‘Go follow that rock and roll dream.’ Everybody’s sort of like, ‘You can do that but make sure you got some sort of reliable alternatives,'» said Odmark.

For Jars of Clay, no alternatives were needed.

Afghanistan is grappling with a vicious insurgency led by the Taliban, who last week made a similar assassination attempt against Kabul’s chief of police Gen

KABUL, Afghanistan — A suicide bomber tried to assassinate a prominent female member of Afghanistan’s parliament on Sunday, killing three people and wounding the lawmaker, a senior official said.

Shukria Barakzai was slightly wounded in the attack on her vehicle as she was heading to parliament, said Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

Another three people, including a young girl, were killed, he said. Earlier, the ministry’s deputy spokesman Najib Danish said at least a dozen others were wounded.

The attacker was in a car that attempted to ram Barakzai’s vehicle. The assailant then detonated explosives, causing a massive blast that was heard across the capital, Sediqqi said.

More in Afghanistan: The way forward

Interior Minister Mohammad Umar Daudzai visited Barakzai at the hospital, Sediqqi said, adding that her driver was also wounded and hospitalized.

Barakzai, 바카라사이트 42, is a high-profile advocate of women’s rights and media freedom. She has been a member of parliament for 10 years and her work has been recognized internationally with a number of awards.
