Moss dominated by both winning several competitions and forming bonds with the other houseguests while always staying loyal to The Brigade alliance, which was formed on the second day in the house

Hayden Moss, a shaggy-haired 24-year-old college student and former baseball player from Tempe, Ariz., won the $500,000 grand prize on the voyeuristic CBS reality TV competition’s season finale Wednesday.

Moss, who was dubbed «The Animal» by his secret four-man alliance, bested bearded 24-year-old oil rig salesman Lane «The Beast» Elenburg from Decatur, Texas.

«It makes me think I can do anything,» Moss said of advancing to the finale.

Moss dominated by both winning several competitions and forming bonds with the other houseguests while always staying loyal to The Brigade alliance, which was formed on the second day in the house.

He defeated Elenburg in the final round of a three-part Head of Household contest, which allowed him to pick Elenburg to battle against for his four jury votes.

Enzo «The Meow Meow» Palumbo, a trash-talking 32-year-old insurance adjuster from Bayonne, N.J., became the seventh member of the jury and cast the deciding vote between his alliance partners for Moss.

Matt «The Brains» Hoffman, a 33-year-old web designer from Elgin, Ill., and the fouth Brigade member who was earlier ousted, also cast his final vote for Moss.

Hoffman, 서울출장안마 who described himself as a «diabolical super-genius,» caused the most controversy this season for lying and telling the other contestants that his wife had a crippling disease called melorheostosis. He said he did it in hopes of securing «sympathy votes» if he made it to the end of the competition.

The plan backfired when the cast learned the truth.

«Make up a lie about your dog,» Elenburg said. «Don’t make up a lie about your wife.»

Besides the $500,000 prize, Moss may have also won a date with 24-year-old boutique manager Kristen Bitting from Philadelphia. Moss and Bitting kept their fling in the house a secret from most of the contestants.

Bitting said she would be open to a relationship with the newly crowned champ, and Moss replied that he would take her «out to get some pizza.»

Of the 80 people in total listed as killed, the group determined 49 were deliberately targeted «because their reporting threatened the interests of certain people in positions of political, economic, or religious power or organized crime.» The other 31 died in the field while reporting, the group said, adding that the group was investigating a further 10 deaths to determine whether they were related to journalism

Media freedom group Reporters Without Borders said Tuesday it has recorded an increase in the number of journalists killed and imprisoned worldwide so far this year. A bright spot was Iraq, where no media deaths were reported so far in 2018, for the first time since 2003.

The Paris-based group, also known by its French acronym RSF, said 63 journalists died in relation to their jobs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1, 2018, compared to 55 in 2017, as well as four media workers. Another 13 people it described as «non-professional journalists» — people who didn’t have official media cards but who were involved in the production of news and information — also died, while 348 were held in detention around the world.

«Non-professional journalists play a fundamental role in the production of news and information in countries with oppressive regimes and countries at war, where it is hard for professional journalists to operate,» the group said in the report.

Of the 80 people in total listed as killed, the group determined 49 were deliberately targeted «because their reporting threatened the interests of certain people in positions of political, economic, or religious power or organized crime.» The other 31 died in the field while reporting, the group said, 완주출장안마 adding that the group was investigating a further 10 deaths to determine whether they were related to journalism.

«Violence against journalists has reached unprecedented levels this year, and the situation is now critical,» Christophe Deloire, the group’s secretary general said. «The hatred of journalists that is voiced, and sometimes very openly proclaimed, by unscrupulous politicians, religious leaders and businessmen has tragic consequences on the ground, and has been reflected in this disturbing increase in violations against journalists.»

The group highlights the case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in Istanbul. It said the killing in October shows «how far some people will go to silence ‘troublesome’ journalists.»

The deadliest country for reporters in 2018 was Afghanistan, where 15 died in violent attacks such as bombings, followed by Syria with 11 and Mexico with nine. The U.S. made it into the top five deadliest countries for journalists this year for the first time, with six dying, including four who were among five people killed by a gunman who opened fire in the offices of Maryland newspaper Capital Gazette. Another two died while covering extreme weather.

MSF listed China as the biggest jailer, holding 60 people, 46 of them described as non-professional journalists «who have tried to compensate for the Communist Party’s increasingly tight control on the traditional media.» Ten of those, the group said, were in danger of dying in Chinese prisons.

Turkey was the world’s biggest jailer of professional journalists in 2018, according to the report, holding 33 of the total 179 being held in detention worldwide. In Egypt, 30 of the 38 journalists being held were still awaiting trial, the group said, including one who has already been held for more than three years without being officially charged.

John Jenkins, director of the FDA’s office of new drugs, declined to say what action the agency would take

The nonbinding recommendations raise the prospect the Food and Drug Administration could modify its approval of the Sanofi-Aventis SA drug, called Ketek, to exclude the treatment of the two lesser infections, 무주출장안마 which often clear up without drug treatment.

The FDA convened a two-day meeting of outside experts to discuss Ketek in light of concerns about its safety. An agency review found 13 reports of liver failure in patients treated with the drug through September. Reports of blurry vision also have been a concern. Doctors have prescribed the antibiotic more than 5.6 million times in the United States since the FDA approved it in 2004.

As CBS News Investigates reported on Dec. 13, there have been questions about the FDA’s handling of Ketek.

In an exclusive interview with CBS News, Dr. David Ross, who reviewed Ketek’s safety for the FDA, said he warned his superiors that the drug was, in his words, a «time bomb,» and was shocked last summer when the acting head of the agency, Dr. Andrew Von Eschenbach, told employees to keep concerns about the drug in-house — and out of the press.

Dr. John Jenkins, director of the FDA’s office of new drugs, declined to say what action the agency would take. The FDA isn’t bound to follow the advice of its outside experts, but usually does.

«We will be assessing the advice we received from the committee and discussing that very shortly,» Jenkins said.

The panel also recommended Sanofi-Aventis develop a medication guide to be given to patients, a move backed by the company.

Dr. John Edwards, of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif., and the panel’s acting chairman, called the two-day meeting particularly challenging, since it came amid concern that companies have diminishing interest in developing new antibiotics and increased interest in safety issues linked to the drugs.

Many experts fear overuse of antibiotics is hastening the increasing resistance of many bacteria to older drugs, making the development of novel treatments critical. Some panelists suggested reserving Ketek for second-line use in treating pneumonia.

The label of the drug was changed in June to add a bold-type warning about the rare reports of liver failure and severe injury, some of them fatal. A majority of panel members said that cautionary language should be strengthened and placed in a so-called «black box» to warn doctors and patients of some of the risks associated with the drug.

The FDA’s handling of Ketek remains under investigation by a Senate committee. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said this week the FDA intentionally withheld information from FDA advisers when they met in 2003 to consider recommending approval of the drug. FDA officials said they would comment after reviewing his allegations, contained in a 20-page letter sent to the agency.

Sanofi-Aventis said the risks associated with the drug, also known as telithromycin, appear to be comparable to those of other similar drugs and that it represents an important option in treating respiratory tract infections.

And there will be plenty of performers — Lady Gaga is expected to kick off the VMAs with her new single, «Applause.» Earlier this week, she told New York City radio station Z-100, «I am opening the show

Ten years ago, something big happened at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Madonna hit the stage at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, opening up the 20th anniversary ceremony with a medley of «Like a Virgin» and «Hollywood.» At her side were pop contemporaries Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. It could have been just an ordinary star-heavy performance, but then something else happened: Madonna French-kissed Spears. We watched as the camera panned to Spears’ ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. And then Madge did it again — she smooched Aguilera.

It’s a decade later, and we find ourselves in a familiar place: New York. This time the VMAs will be held at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Timberlake will be on hand once again, and there’s even talk of an *NSYNC reunion.

Jimmy Fallon will present Timberlake with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Previous recipients have included Madonna, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Spears.

And there will be plenty of performers — Lady Gaga is expected to kick off the VMAs with her new single, «Applause.» Earlier this week, she told New York City radio station Z-100, «I am opening the show. Well, yes, I’m dancing and what you see in the video is where I am now with my body. I’m dancing ’til my feet bleed every day to make sure I give the fans a performance that they won’t forget.»

Other acts set to hit the stage include Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West and Drake. Katy Perry will close the show (from an undisclosed location) with her new single, «Roar,» off her upcoming album, «Prism,» due Oct. 22. The VMAs are always a little bit more fun and rowdy than other awards shows, so there’s bound to be some surprises in the works. Another epic kiss, perhaps? We’ll likely see some twerking from Cyrus, an outrageous outfit or two from Gaga, a «surprise» performance from Daft Punk, and maybe something crazy, or the very least memorable, from West.

Presenters on hand will include Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jared Leto, Kevin Hart, Emeli Sande and A$AP Rocky. MTV will also present the movie trailer for «Divergent» during the VMAs pre-show.

And there will be plenty of moonmen to go around. Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis top this year’s nominations with six nods. Bruno Mars isn’t far behind with four nods, and Robin Thicke, Cyrus and Pink are each in the running for three honors.

Other notable contenders include Swift, Drake, fun., 완주출장안마 Calvin Harris and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as first-time VMA nominees Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd and Capital Cities.

Fans have been able to vote for general VMA categories, including video of the year. Go here for a list of nominees.

The MTV Video Music Awards will air Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV, so check back here for complete coverage.
